IVAN COYOTE Saturday, March 20

Velvet Underground | 646 Baker St. Nelson | 7:30 pm

About Ivan Coyote
I was born and raised in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. I am the author of six books: Close to Spiderman, One Man’s Trash, Loose End, and The Slow Fix, all short story collections, Boys Like Her (along with Lyndell Mongomery, Anna Camilleri and Zoe Eakle), and my first novel, Bow Grip. I also have two CD’s out, entitled You’re A Nation (2003) and You Are Here (2007 with musician Rae Spoon). I write a monthly column for Vancouver’s Xtra West magazine, which is also called Loose End. I am currently working on a graphic novel, illustrated by my cousin, artist Dan Bushnell, and a CD of live stories with music by the fabulous and magical Veda Hille, the handsome and talented Dan Mangan, the brave and amazing Rae Spoon, and the cello stylings of the one and only Cris Derksen. I am also about halfway through the first draft of my new novel, the working title of which is The Truth About That Man. In 2007 musician Rae Spoon and I created a one hour show called You Are Here, a series of stories and songs about the Yukon. We released a live CD of the premiere performance of that show in July of 2007, recorded at The Yukon Arts Centre in Whitehorse. I am a full time writer and performer, and I haven’t worked a day job in almost six years. In my spare time I like to play road hockey,go fishing, garden, knit, and do leatherwork. I dream of buying an old airstream trailer and tricking it out to take my girlfriend on road trips, and of owning my very own old house one day. I like campfires, kitchen table stories, good books and home cooking. I believe in miracles and hard work. [myspace]

During the March events to celebrate International Women’s Day, the West Kootenay Women’s Association is proud to present kootenayfeminism.com, a digital history of efforts of West Kootenay women to create a more just, joyful, safe and supportive society where women and girls are valued for their contributions, and have access to real choices regarding how they live their lives, earn their livings and find their rightful place. The Kootenays is home to Canada’s oldest rural women’s centre, and hosted Canada’s earliest Women’s Festivals. The preservation of these stories, their challenges and successes, is an idea whose time has come.  more==>

about gender variance using a variety of different artistic mediums.

Guest speakers include:

Ann Travers – Assistant Professor of Sociology, Simon Fraser University

World AIDS Day Event, December 1st

Here are the details of the World AIDS Day Event, Tuesday December 1st at 7pm at the Nelson United Church.

ANKORS and the Nelson United Church host World AIDS Day, December 1st, 7PM at the Nelson United Church at the corner of Josephine and Silica Streets. World AIDS Day is held every December 1st as communities around the world honour and commemorate those lost to AIDS and those who continue to live with the effects of HIV/AIDS. World AIDS Day is also used to mark the achievements made, and the work still to be done in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Around 40 million people are living wit HIV throughout the world and that number increases everyday. Ignorance, poverty and stigma are fueling the spread of this preventable disease. The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is human rights.

This December 1st provides an opportunity for our community to unite with the rest of the world in working to stop the spread of HIV and in ending prejudice and discrimination against those living with the disease. Please join us on December 1st at the Nelson United Church for a service conducted by Rev David Boyd, with musical guests, the One World Choir and Aspen Switzer. Refreshments to follow. All welcome.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

transdayofrememb

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an occasion in the LGBT community set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice (transphobia). The event is held on 20 November. It was founded by Gwendolyn Ann Smith to honor Rita Hester, whose murder in 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco, California candlelight vigil in 1999. Since then, the event has grown to encompass memorials in hundreds of cities around the world.

Please spread the word and join us for Trans Day of Rememberance – November 20th, a vigil to raise awareness on violence towards transgender/gender variants/gender queer folks.

Remember the dead…Honor the Living…
